Case Size vs Lug-to-Lug: The Number That Decides Fit
Case diameter is the figure manufacturers advertise, but it routinely misleads. Lug-to-lug — the span from the top lug tips to the bottom — is what actually determines whether a watch sits cleanly on your wrist or pivots off the edge, and the two numbers do not track together.
What each measurement is
Case diameter is conventionally measured across the case, roughly from the 8 to the 2 o'clock position, excluding the crown. This is the primary size most manufacturers list, which is exactly why it carries more weight than it deserves. It tells you the width of the round or rectangular case, not how far the watch reaches across your wrist.
Lug-to-lug measures that reach: the total distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the lug diagonally opposite. Brands almost never publish it. Do not confuse it with lug width, which is the gap between the two lugs on the same side of the case and tells you your strap size — usually between 18mm and 22mm for men's watches. Lug width is a strap spec; lug-to-lug is a fit spec.
Why diameter lies
Three verified examples show how far apart the two numbers can drift.
The Doxa SUB 300 is 42.5mm in diameter but only around 45mm lug-to-lug. That is roughly 3mm shorter across the wrist than a modern Rolex Submariner, even though the Doxa is 2mm larger in diameter. A bigger dial does not mean a bigger-wearing watch — short, downturned lugs can pull a wide case in tight.
Rectangular watches distort the picture even harder. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph is listed at 29.9mm wide, a figure that sounds tiny, but its lug-to-lug is 49.4mm. The width of a rectangle badly understates its span across the wrist. A separate Reverso reference is cited at 27.4mm wide with a 45.2mm lug-to-lug — a different model, so treat the two as separate data points rather than one figure for "the Reverso." Either way, the printed width makes the watch sound daintier than it wears.

Typical ranges
One retailer gives working ranges of 42–55mm lug-to-lug for men's watches and 36–46mm for women's and unisex pieces. Treat these as typical rather than authoritative — they come from a single outlet, and there is no industry standard or statute governing how case or lug measurements are reported. The conventions here are trade custom, not law.
Case thickness has its own commonly cited band: most watches fall between 8mm and 14mm, measured across the case height excluding the crystal. That number decides how tall the watch sits, but see the caveat on distribution below.
Fit heuristics — and their limits
The most repeated rule of thumb: your lug-to-lug should be shorter than the flat top of your wrist. If it overhangs, the case pivots when you flex and never settles properly. This is a heuristic, not a measured law, but it is the single most useful one because it directly compares the fit number to your anatomy rather than the advertised diameter.
One niche site offers a numeric guide: a lug-to-lug under 47mm fits most wrists of 160mm circumference or larger; 47–50mm wants a 170mm-plus wrist; and 50mm and above is reserved for wrists of 180mm or more. The same source uses two worked examples — a 42mm watch with a 53mm lug-to-lug overhanging a 175mm wrist, and a 44mm watch with a 47mm lug-to-lug sitting cleanly on it — to show that the larger diameter is not the deciding factor. Useful as a mental model, but the underlying model lug-to-lug figures on that source are unverified against manufacturer specs, so use the table as a rough gauge, not gospel.
Thickness distribution matters as much as the number
A single thickness figure hides how the watch actually wears. A 14mm watch can feel surprisingly slim if the mid-case tapers, the caseback settles into the wrist, and the bezel transitions are gentle. Conversely, an 11mm watch can feel like a slab if the sides are vertical and the case sits high with no visual relief. When you compare two thickness numbers, you are not comparing two experiences — geometry decides the outcome.
Hardware adds effective width
The diameter also omits everything bolted to the case flanks. Chronograph pushers, crown guards, and helium escape valves add to the effective width and change how the watch wears. A 40mm case with prominent complications can wear closer to 42mm. So the honest fit picture is three numbers plus a shape: diameter, lug-to-lug, thickness, and how the case and its hardware are distributed.
How to use this before buying
Start with lug-to-lug, not diameter. Measure the flat top of your wrist and treat that as your ceiling. Check thickness, then look at profile photos to judge whether that thickness tapers or slabs. Finally, account for pushers and guards that push the effective width past the listed figure.
