Service Intervals by Brand: What Each Maker Publishes
The headline service interval a brand prints is rarely the whole answer. It shifts with the movement inside the case, and independents often observe shorter real-world intervals than the number on the care page. Here is what each maker actually publishes, and where the tension lies.
Read the interval as a movement figure, not a brand figure
Nearly every long interval a modern brand quotes is tied to a specific generation of caliber. The same maker's older movement often carries a shorter observed interval. Reading a single brand number without knowing which caliber sits in the case is the most common mistake collectors make. Check what runs inside your reference on the model page before you trust the headline figure.
Rolex
Rolex's own FAQ recommends returning the watch approximately every 10 years, depending on the model and real-life usage, to guarantee continued accuracy and waterproofness. Separately, Rolex guarantees proper functioning for five years from the date of purchase. That 10-year figure is the current published position, but independents commonly cite shorter intervals for older watches: one workshop summary states Rolex older models suit servicing every four to five years and newer models approximately every ten. Note that the widely-repeated claim Rolex moved to 10 years "around 2015" could not be confirmed from a first-party source, so it is not stated here as fact.
Omega
Omega's service page recommends a complete service every 5 to 8 years at an authorised service centre, with a twenty-four month warranty on each intervention, plus an annual water-resistance check. The caveat is the escapement. The co-axial escapement, invented by George Daniels and adopted by Omega in 1999, reduces friction between escapement components compared with a traditional Swiss lever escapement. Modern Master Chronometer calibers (8xxx/9xxx) approach the 8-year end. Older calibers such as the 1120 (modified ETA 2892) and 1164 (modified ETA 7750) follow a more traditional 4-5 year interval. Same brand, different physics.
Patek Philippe
Patek's current guidance is longer than most retailers still repeat: quartz and mechanical watches with manually wound and self-winding movements should be serviced every eight to ten years through an official Service Center or Authorized Retailer. Patek also notes a quartz battery lasts from two to three years. The observable story is the gap: multiple specialist retailers still publish shorter figures, one stating the official recommendation is a complete service every 5 to 7 years. When you see 3-5 or 5-7 quoted for Patek, you are reading an older number, not the maker's present position.
Audemars Piguet
AP's own terms cover labour and parts in a complete maintenance service under a two-year warranty across its global network, alongside a complimentary annual check of chronometry, functions, water-resistance and magnetisation. Beyond that, AP's published cadence is best understood through workshop practice. An AP watchmaker in Zurich recommended a small service every three years focused on water resistance, with gaskets, crown and pushers replaced, and a full service every six years with everything dismantled, checked, cleaned and replaced as required. The same watchmaker attributed shorter modern intervals to environmentally-mandated lubricant changes.
Tudor
The manufacturer-versus-watchmaker tension is sharpest at Tudor. Tudor officially recommends servicing approximately every 10 years, depending on model and real-life usage, and that figure applies specifically to its in-house MT-series calibres. Its post-service Service Guarantee is two years and does not cover accidental damage or inappropriate use. Tudor extended its purchase warranty for all watches sold to five years starting from 2020. But a watchmaker forum flags that many watchmakers say 3-5 years for an ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1, so the 10-year figure does not necessarily apply to Tudor's older ETA-based watches. Know which caliber you own before committing to a decade.
Grand Seiko and Seiko: the short-interval outlier
Seiko sets notably shorter intervals than Swiss norms, and states them in its own manuals. Spring Drive (9R) manual wording recommends inspection and adjustment by disassembly and cleaning within 3 to 4 years from date of purchase. A watchmaker summary reports Seiko lists 3-4 years for both 9F and 9R (Spring Drive) manuals, and 2-3 years for the 9S automatic movements. An owner who contacted Grand Seiko UK about an SBGA211 was advised servicing every 3 years; treat that as an anecdote, not manufacturer data. The collector claim that spring drives run far longer between services is forum opinion, explicitly noted as not official, and is excluded here.
Cross-brand figures to verify before you rely on them
A retailer round-up lists published intervals for brands not covered above: Patek Philippe every 3-5 years; Audemars Piguet every 4-6 years; Tag Heuer every 5-6 years; Breitling every 2 years for water resistance with a full service every 4-6 years; Cartier every 5 years; IWC every 5-7 years; Jaeger-LeCoultre every 5-7 years; Panerai every 4-5 years. These come from a retailer, not the manufacturers' own care pages, and the Patek and AP entries already conflict with the first-party figures above. Treat them as leads to check against each brand's official care page, not as primary sources.
How to use these numbers
Three practical rules follow from the notes. First, match the interval to the caliber generation, not the brand name, especially for Omega and Tudor where in-house and ETA-based movements diverge. Second, treat annual water-resistance checks (Omega, AP) as separate from full overhauls; they are not the same event. Third, the shorter observed intervals cited by independents are not contradictions of the brands so much as a different risk tolerance around lubricant life.
