Bracelet and Clasp Types: Specifications and Dates

The four Rolex bracelet families

The Jubilee debuted in 1945 to mark Rolex's 40th anniversary and was created for the launch of the Datejust. It uses a five-link construction of smaller semi-circular links, which is the quickest way to tell it apart from the three-link Oyster. The name ties to Hans Wilsdorf's founding of what later became Rolex S.A. in 1905.

The Oyster is a three-link design, but its introduction year is genuinely contested across sources. One account places it in 1948, arriving with its own Oyster clasp for sport models; others put it in the late 1930s and cite a 1947 patent for the flat three-piece link, with solid curved end links following in 1952 to close the gap between bracelet and case. The 1947 patent and 1952 end-link claims come from a dealer blog rather than Rolex, so treat the single-year attribution as unverified until a Rolex primary source confirms it.

The President bracelet was introduced in 1956 alongside the Day-Date and has stayed exclusive to that model, produced only in precious metals including 18k gold. The common story that it earned its name after President Lyndon B. Johnson was photographed in a yellow gold Day-Date is anecdotal tradition, not documented fact.

The Pearlmaster bracelet, introduced in 1992, was made for high-jewelry watches in precious metals, often gem-set. Production of the Pearlmaster line was discontinued in 2022, which makes it the only bracelet here with a firm end date.

Note what is deliberately absent: there are no reliable manufacturer-published figures for the millimetre link widths or weights of Oyster versus Jubilee versus President, so any such numbers you see elsewhere should be checked against Rolex directly. Clasp micro-adjustment: the numbers

Two Rolex systems dominate, and their specifications are published by Rolex itself. Easylink, patented in 1996, is a rapid-extension link concealed under the clasp that adds about 5 mm; unclipping or clipping the extra link takes a single move and no tools.

Glidelock is a toolless rack system for finer control. On the Oyster bracelet it has 10 notches of approximately 2 mm each, giving the roughly 20 mm range that is widely cited (10 × 2 mm). Glidelock was introduced in 2008 on the Sea-Dweller Deepsea reference 116660, then extended to the Submariner reference 116610 in 2010, allowing 20 mm of adjustment in 2 mm increments while the watch stays on the wrist.

For divers there is an additional link. On the 2014 Sea-Dweller, the Glidelock's 20 mm range combines with a Fliplock extension link that adds 27 mm, letting the watch fit over a thick suit without tools. That 27 mm figure comes from a Wikipedia summary; other sources round the total dive extension to 26 mm on the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea, so verify against a current Rolex spec sheet before printing an exact number.

Why the extension exists

The dive extension is a response to depth rating, not decoration. Rolex's own figures put the Sea-Dweller, launched in 1967, at 4,000 feet (1,220 metres), and the Deepsea, unveiled in 2008, at 12,800 feet (3,900 metres). Integrated bracelets: the 1972 origin point

An integrated bracelet is built into the case rather than attached with conventional lugs, and the reference case for the format is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak reference 5402ST, released at the 1972 Basel Fair. It paired an octagonal bezel, a 39 mm case, and an integrated bracelet described in the sources as very complex to build. The design was the work of Gerald Genta, and U.S. Patent 3.756.017 was filed under his name.

The production history is worth knowing because it undercuts the idea that the model was an instant runaway. According to Audemars Piguet's own archive, Model 5402 was originally planned as a run of 1,000 units but eventually reached 6,050 units, sold between 1972 and 2002. Two comparison points for micro-adjustment

Rolex is not the only maker with a toolless clasp, and the specifications differ in ways that matter on the wrist.

Set side by side, the design philosophies are clear. Rolex's Glidelock rack trades speed for granularity across a 20 mm span in 2 mm steps; Tudor's T-Fit favours a small, discrete 8 mm range in five clicks; and the Pelagos clasp automates the diving case entirely across three positions. None of these is objectively superior; the right one depends on whether you value fine standing adjustment, quick summer-to-winter changes, or hands-off dive compensation.

One omission is deliberate. A figure sometimes quoted for Omega's micro-adjust increment (1–2 mm) traced back to an AI-generated marketplace listing referencing a third-party clasp, not Omega's own documentation, so it is not published here. When a specification cannot be tied to a manufacturer source, it stays out.
