Submariner 16613 vs 116613LB: Two-Tone, Two Eras

The two-tone Sub didn't change all at once. Here's what Rolex actually shifted between the 16613 and 116613LB, and what it means for buyers.

Submariner 16613 vs 116613LB: Two-Tone, Two Eras

The two-tone Submariner has been a consistent part of the Rolex catalog for decades, pairing stainless steel with yellow gold across the case, bracelet, and bezel surround. The 16613 and the 116613LB occupy sequential chapters of that story, and on a side-by-side comparison the differences are more meaningful than photos suggest.

What Rolex kept the same

Both references run at 40mm, water resistance sits at 300 meters on each, and the movement is Rolex's calibre 3135 throughout. The two-tone formula -- steel with yellow gold accents -- carries across without interruption. If you're drawn to the proportions of the two-tone Sub, neither generation will feel dramatically different from across the room. The differences show up when you look closely at the hardware.

The bezel is the clearest dividing line

Aluminum was Rolex's insert material on the 16613. It takes color well and has a certain warmth to it, but it scratches and fades with time. A well-worn 16613 bezel will often show visible marks, and the lume pip at 12 o'clock can oxidize to a cream or brown over the years. Some buyers like exactly that kind of aging. Others don't.

Cerachrom ceramic replaced that aluminum on the 116613LB. Ceramic holds its color and resists scratching far better, and the 116613LB's blue bezel stays consistent regardless of how often the watch contacts hard surfaces. For buyers who want the watch to look the same in year ten as it did on day one, the ceramic generation has a clear practical edge.

Case shape and bracelet updates

Rolex also revised the case with the 116613LB. Crown guards grew slightly, the lugs filled out, and the overall shape became what collectors refer to as the maxi case. It reads as more modern, slightly more substantial. The older 16613 has a trimmer profile that some wearers find more refined, particularly on smaller wrists.

Bracelet adjustability improved as well. The 116613LB gained the Glidelock extension system built into the clasp, which allows micro-adjustments to wearing length without removing links or using tools. On the 16613, any fit change requires taking links out. It's a quality-of-life difference that doesn't affect performance but does reduce the friction of daily wear.

The ones in stock right now

The Rolex Submariner ref 16613T is a 2003 example in steel and yellow gold with a black dial and black aluminum bezel on an Oyster bracelet. Used condition, no box, no papers. A 2003 production date puts this squarely in the middle of the aluminum-bezel era, and the black-on-black configuration is the more versatile two-tone color scheme. Buyers drawn to the trimmer 16613 case shape and the natural aging character of an aluminum bezel will find that combination here.

At the other end of the timeline, the Rolex Submariner 116613LB is a 2017 steel-and-yellow-gold example with a blue ceramic bezel and blue dial on an Oyster bracelet. Used, no box, but papers are present, which adds documented provenance that matters if resale ever comes into play. Blue-on-blue is one of the more visually distinctive two-tone configurations Rolex produces, and the ceramic bezel means the color holds regardless of how often the watch is worn. Glidelock is part of the package as well.

Box, papers, and what they mean at resale

Papers don't change how a watch runs, but they carry real weight if you ever sell. Neither watch here has a box. Only the 116613LB has papers. For a buyer planning to hold long-term without much concern about eventual resale, this distinction matters less. For anyone who thinks about future liquidity, the documented 116613LB has a concrete practical advantage over an equivalent watch with no paperwork at all.

Choosing between these two generations comes down to what matters most on your wrist. The 16613 offers the older case geometry, aluminum bezel character, and a different entry point into two-tone Submariner ownership. The 116613LB gives you ceramic, Glidelock, and the maxi case in the same 40mm footprint. Both are genuine expressions of the same watch built roughly fourteen years apart.
