What is my watch worth?

Two different numbers

Every watch has a retail number and a trade number, and they are rarely close. The retail number is what a boutique or a marketplace listing asks. The trade number is what somebody will actually hand you for it today. A valuation from this desk is the second one, because we are the buyer — there is no consignment queue, no listing fee and nobody in the middle taking a percentage on the way through.

That also means the figure is honest in both directions. If your reference is one the market has cooled on, you will hear that rather than watch it sit on a listing for six months.

What actually moves the number

The reference, not the model name. Two watches that look identical in a photograph can be two references with different case sizes, different movements and a meaningful gap between them.
Condition of the case and dial. An unpolished case with sharp lug chamfers carries a premium. A refinished dial usually costs more than a scratched one.
Box and papers. Original papers with matching serial move the figure more than most people expect, particularly on recent references.
Service history. A recent service from the manufacturer or a competent independent removes the buyer’s risk, and the number reflects that.
What the market is doing this month. Trade figures are not stable across a year. A valuation from March is not a valuation for October.

How it works

Tell us the brand, the reference if you have it, and roughly what year — and send photographs of the dial straight on, the caseback and the papers.

If you take it, we send a fully insured, signature-required shipping label. If you pass, nothing happens and it costs you nothing.
Once the watch is checked in and matches the photographs, you are paid — in cash, or as credit against something else here, which is normally the stronger figure.

What is my watch actually worth?

Two numbers exist for any watch: what it retails for and what it trades for. A valuation from us is the second one — what a specialist will pay for it today, in the condition it is actually in, with the paperwork you actually have. That figure moves with the reference, the year, the condition of the case and dial, and whether the box and papers are with it.

Does a valuation cost anything?

No. Send the reference and photographs and you get a figure back with no charge and no obligation. If you want a signed document for insurance or an estate rather than an offer to buy, that is a written appraisal and it is a separate paid service.

How long does it take?

A specialist comes back with a firm figure inside one business day once we have clear photographs and the reference number.

Do I have to be nearby?

No. This is a national desk — most pieces we buy arrive by post. We cover fully insured, signature-required shipping in both directions, so if you decide against the offer the watch goes straight back to you at our cost.

What if I do not know the reference?

Photograph the caseback, the papers if you have them, and the dial straight on. The reference is usually between the lugs at the 12 o’clock side, and a specialist can identify most pieces from the photographs alone.

Can I put the value toward another watch instead?

Yes. Any offer can be taken as cash or as credit against something else, and the credit figure is normally the stronger of the two.
