The ref. 116600 is the only modern 40 mm Sea-Dweller built with a ceramic bezel — a three-year production run that closed in 2017 and never reopened.
The reference 116600 is a 40 mm stainless steel Sea-Dweller produced by Rolex from approximately 2014 to 2017. It debuted at Baselworld 2014 as the direct successor to the long-running ref. 16600 and immediately distinguished itself with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel — a first for the Sea-Dweller line. The dial is the standard matte black with applied hour markers and luminous plots, paired with an Oyster bracelet in 904L steel. This example presents in like-new condition without box or papers.
Rolex discontinued the 116600 after only three years in production, replacing it in 2017 with the larger 43 mm ref. 126600 issued to mark the Sea-Dweller's 50th anniversary. That short window means the 116600 never accumulated the secondary-market supply of a longer-run reference. Collectors who prefer 40 mm over 43 mm — still a sizeable share of the dive-watch market — treat the 116600 as the last modern Sea-Dweller at the classic diameter. The combination of a tight production run and a meaningful specification step up from its predecessor has kept demand consistent.
The outgoing ref. 16600 used an anodized aluminum bezel insert, which is susceptible to fading over decades — a routine criticism of pre-ceramic Rolex sport watches. The 116600 replaced it with a Cerachrom ceramic insert: scratch-resistant and colorfast under UV. Case and bracelet construction also reflects Rolex's refinements of the era, including the Glidelock extension system in the clasp for wetsuit adjustment. Everything that defines a Sea-Dweller carried through: the helium escape valve at 9 o'clock, water resistance rated to 1,220 metres (4,000 feet), and a flat sapphire crystal with no cyclops lens over the date. That last detail — no cyclops — is a deliberate Sea-Dweller design tradition and a clear visual distinction from the Submariner Date.
The 116600 runs Rolex Caliber 3135, a self-winding movement with a Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers, 48-hour power reserve, and an oscillation rate of 28,800 vph. It carries COSC chronometer certification. Rolex has since introduced newer in-house calibers, but the 3135 has a long service record and parts availability through qualified independent watchmakers is not a concern.
This example is described as like new. The ceramic bezel insert on a piece in this state should present without scratches or chips, and the brushed and polished surfaces of the Oyster case and bracelet should show minimal disturbance. The watch does not come with its original box or papers. Buyers who place significant weight on original provenance documentation should factor that in; the absence of papers has no effect on the watch's serviceability.
Pre-owned 116600 examples without box and papers trade across a range on the grey market, with like-new condition carrying a premium over worn examples. The reference has appreciated from its retail-era levels, supported by its discontinued status, the 40 mm preference among modern buyers, and the general firmness of Rolex steel sport references in secondary trading. As the only modern Sea-Dweller produced at 40 mm with a ceramic bezel, the 116600 holds a well-defined position in the production history of the line.
