Two Monacos, One Honest Dial

<p>A blue-dial Monaco crossed the desk last week with a re-lumed dial and a proud owner who could not understand why three buyers walked. The watch looked sharp in photos. The dial had been touched, and on a Monaco that is the whole conversation.</p><p>The reference everyone chases is the square 1133B, the left-crown blue dial worn on screen in 1971. Original examples with honest dials and correct hands sit at the top of the market and rarely sit for long. The catch is that 1133B on a listing means little without the dial to back it, and a repainted or serviced dial cuts the number hard.</p><p>The wider pattern is that the Monaco punishes restoration more than most vintage chronographs. Its charm is the case shape and the dial print; fix either and you have erased what a collector pays for. Later runs help read the trend. The modern Calibre 11 reissue with the left crown sells on looks and stays affordable. The in-house Calibre Heuer 02 pieces run pricier new and depreciate on the way out, the way most current chronographs do. Special and Gulf-liveried editions hold better when the run is small and the box and papers are present.</p><p>What crossed the desk this month says it plainly. Two Monacos, same reference, one honest and one restored, and the honest one cleared at a real premium while the restored one needed a discount to move at all. Buyers now check the dial before the price, and they should. That is the pattern under the anecdote, and it is not going backward.</p><p>A note to leave on it: with a Monaco, condition is not a detail on top of the reference, it is the reference. Buy the dial, not the digits, and you will resell without an apology.</p>
