Rolex Daytona — $18,050 – $285,700

The Rolex Daytona is the marque's benchmark chronograph, born in 1963 as a purpose-built tool watch for racing drivers and now among horology's most coveted references. Defined by screw-down pushers, a tachymeter scale, and a three-register dial, it houses Rolex's in-house column-wheel caliber. Secondary-market demand reliably outpaces supply, sustaining premiums that make the Daytona a cornerstone of any serious sports-watch collection.

Buying a Rolex Daytona

All current production Daytonas measure 40mm — fixed since reference 16520 debuted in 1988. This stock spans two generations: 116-prefix references (caliber 4130, produced through approximately 2023) and the current 126-prefix series (caliber 4131, launched 2023), distinguishable by a revised bracelet architecture and skeletonized rotor. Metal choice drives value decisively: Rolesor two-tone steel-and-yellow-gold (116523, 126503-0001) represents the accessible entry into precious-metal Daytonas, while full yellow gold (126508-0008) and white gold (116519L, 126509) command meaningful premiums. Diamond- and gem-set references such as 116589RBR carry the highest retail and secondary-market prices. On every piece, verify dial condition and original box-and-papers — documentation materially impacts resale value.

Generations & references

Original manual-wind references (1963–1987) — including the legendary "Paul Newman" exotic-dial variants — established the bloodline. Reference 16520 (1988) introduced the 40mm case and Zenith-based automatic movement. The 116520 (2000) delivered the fully in-house caliber 4130; the 126-series (2023) refined it as caliber 4131.

Pricing

The $21,362–$106,950 spread reflects Rolesor two-tone at the entry point, rising through full yellow and white gold to heavily gem-set references at the ceiling. Current live range: $18,050 – $285,700. Prices shown are wire; card adds 3.5%.
