The Rolex GMT-Master II is the archetypal professional traveler's watch, born from a 1954 collaboration with Pan American Airways. The "II" designation, introduced in 1983, marks an independently settable 24-hour hand — a genuine functional upgrade over the original. A 40mm Oyster case, rotating 24-hour ceramic bezel in iconic two-tone colorways, and Rolex's Cal. 3285 movement define the modern lineup, cementing its status as the most coveted sport Rolex on the secondary market.

The GMT-Master II runs exclusively at 40mm. Current references — the 126710BLNR ("Batman," blue-black ceramic), 126710GRNR ("Sprite," green-black), and 126720VTNR (left-crown "Destro") — share Cal. 3285 and come on Jubilee or Oyster bracelets. Earlier 16710 and 116710BLNR pieces offer meaningful entry points with proven reliability. Two-tone steel and yellow-gold examples (e.g., 16713) trade at a discount to full-steel but attract a distinct collector segment. Bezel colorway is the primary value driver: Sprite currently commands a notable premium over Batman. Box-and-papers completeness, bracelet stretch, and service history all materially affect resale pricing. Avoid polished cases or replacement bracelets unless the price reflects it.
Key eras: the 16710 (1989–2007) introduced the independent GMT hand; the 116710BLNR (2013) debuted Cerachrom two-tone bezels; the current 126710-series (2019+) adds Cal. 3285 with Chronergy escapement and a revised clasp.
