Rolex Milgauss — $11,500 – $13,700

The Rolex Milgauss is the brand's antimagnetic specialist, engineered in 1956 for scientists and engineers exposed to electromagnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss. Distinguished by its iconic lightning-bolt seconds hand and—on the GV variant—a striking green sapphire crystal, it occupies a singular niche in the Rolex catalog: purposeful, quietly eccentric, and set apart from the mainstream sport lineup in both function and personality.

Buying a Rolex Milgauss

All current-generation Milgauss references measure 40mm in Oystersteel, housing Rolex's Calibre 3131 within a soft-iron Faraday cage. The two key references diverge at the crystal: the 116400 uses standard sapphire (available in black or white dial), while the 116400GV features the 'glace verte' green sapphire that defines the model's modern identity. Rolex quietly discontinued both references circa 2023, elevating the importance of full set—box, papers, and warranty card—for resale value. Orange-dial GV examples attract collector premiums. Inspect crystals closely; the green tint is a factory-only replacement.

Generations & references

The 1956 reference 6541 debuted with a honeycomb dial and matching bezel. The refined reference 1019 followed before a nearly 20-year hiatus beginning in 1988. The 2007 revival—116400 and 116400GV—became the model's definitive and final modern era.

Pricing

At $11,500 for steel examples, pricing reflects a recently discontinued reference finding its post-production floor—rational value with scarcity-driven upside ahead. Current live range: $11,500 – $13,700. Prices shown are wire; card adds 3.5%.
